All of our physicians are board certified and trained to treat a wide variety of orthopedic concerns. Our physicians and staff work in a collaborative setting through a team approach that includes Physicians, Physician Assistants, Orthopedic Surgeons, Physical Therapists, and our Athletic Trainer. We diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal problems from injury to wear and tear. Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence helps patients of all ages and activity levels.
Dr. Weinstein is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Colorado as well as a one year fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Reconstruction at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Following that, he completed an additional trauma fellowship in Switzerland and Germany.
Dr. Weinstein is on staff at the University of Colorado Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Denver where he is an associate clinical professor. He is active in research and education and has published a number of research papers. Dr. Weinstein is also a member of the Olympic Training Center medical staff. He was a team physician for the United States Team at both the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games as well as the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He served as the head physician for the U.S. Pan American Games 2003 team and the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games.
Dr. Weinstein specializes in sports medicine, shoulder and elbow disorders, and knee surgery.

John R. Shank, M.D. is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Colorado followed by a one year fellowship in Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Shank next completed a Sports Medicine fellowship with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.
Dr. Shank has volunteered his time teaching residents at the University of Colorado Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is active in research and education and has published numerous peer-reviewed research papers. Dr. Shank serves as a consultant to the Olympic Training Center and is a Foot and Ankle consultant for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies.
Dr. Shank specializes in Foot and Ankle reconstructive procedures, ankle replacement, arthroscopic and open fusion, ankle arthroscopy, lower extremity fracture care, sports medicine, cartilage restoration procedures of the ankle, and bunion/ foot surgery.
Derek B. Purcell, M.D. received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine where he graduated with distinction. He then completed his orthopaedic residency at Washington University in St. Louis and subsequently completed a one year fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Washington University as well.
Dr. Purcell has previously served as assistant team physician for the St. Louis Rams (NFL), St. Louis Blues (NHL), and St. Louis Cardinals (MLB) professional athletic organizations. He is a previous member of the NFL Team Physicians Society and has assisted at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, IN as well as Spring Training with the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter, FL. He has also provided care for both collegiate and high school athletics in the Colorado Springs community.
Dr. Purcell specializes in advanced arthroscopic techniques, total shoulder replacement, and cartilage restoration procedures. He has written many articles published within peer-reviewed literature and serves as a guest reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Karl M. Larsen, M.D. is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center as well as a one year fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at The Indiana Hand Center. He spent six years stationed at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs where, in addition to performing Hand Surgery, he has held positions as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, Deputy Chief of the Medical Staff, Flight Commander for Inpatient and Emergency Services, and Deputy Squadron Commander for Medical Operations. He specializes in all aspects of hand surgery, athletic associated conditions of the wrist, upper extremity trauma reconstruction, and disorders of the elbow, shoulder fractures, total shoulder replacements and work related injuries.
Lee A. McFadden, M.D. graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Bethesda, MD. He completed his internship Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, Aurora, CO and his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI. He completed a one year fellowship in Total Joint and Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Colorado Joint Replacement in Denver, CO.
He has served as Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Service at multiple locations during his 26 years as an Army Officer in addition to teaching staff positions at both Madigan Army Medical Center, Ft. Lewis, WA and Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Ft. Gordon, GA . Assignment locations have included Alaska, Hawaii, Virginia, South Korea, and Iraq.
Dr. McFadden’s main areas of expertise are in primary and revision total hip and total knee replacement with additional expertise in partial joint replacement, joint resurfacing, hip arthroscopy, fracture surgery, and sports medicine.
Jeremy Raulie, M.S., PA-C is a graduate of The Chicago Medical School / Finch University of Health Sciences. He has served as a Physician Assistant with Dr. Dave Weinstein in the practice of orthopedics and sports medicine since 2003. He helps evaluate and treat orthopedic and sports medicine conditions. Jeremy assists in surgical procedures including joint and ligament reconstruction, arthroscopy, fracture and trauma care of the shoulder, elbow, knee, foot and ankle. He is active in research and education. Jeremy grew up in the Colorado Springs community and worked in physical therapy and as an exercise physiologist for many years prior to attending school to become a Physician Assistant.
Michael Buckler is the Director of the Rehabilitation Department. Michael is responsible for the outpatient rehabilitation clinic, specializing in outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine. In addition he is involved with ongoing development and refinement of clinical protocols, community education, staff development, and the development of an outpatient rehabilitation/human performance center.

Joel Dixon evaluates and treats post-surgical and non-surgical patients with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, performing arts, and sports related conditions. The sports population includes pediatric, competitive high school, collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes.
